Rock Foundation is more than just a name, its what we are and who we are. We exist to be a solid Rock, and a Firm Foundation, from which people with learning disabilities and other disadvantages can build a better life. The Rock Foundation is a front-line charitable organisation that has created new and unique provision for young people and adults with learning disabilities and those who are disadvantaged. Through a wide variety of practical workshops and supported work placements, we aim to help our service users develop life and employment skills, to increase their self-esteem and independence, and ultimately improve their quality of life.Within the Grimsby and Cleethorpes district in which Rock largely operates, there are 2,556 people known to have learning disabilities, and many more who are not included in these figures. Out of this 2,556 only 546 receive any form of support or provision. Usually this provision is basic respite care, or supported housing, which although beneficial to the carer, is of limited value in allowing individuals with learning disabilities to achieve their full potential. Current provision for people with learning disabilities is limited, especially for those with a mild or moderate impairment. After the age of 18 this support diminishes even further, and many people with learning disabilities are left to fend for themselves or remain dependent on parents and carers. This can put a strain on carers, the local council, and other health and social care resources.Rock aims to alleviate this strain by promoting independence, providing a supportive atmosphere for people with learning disabilities, and allowing parents and carers to have a break, while providing a cost-effective and high quality service.
